A REPORT ON VETERAN AFFAIRS
The Department of Veteran Affairs reports as many as 250,000 veterans are living on the streets or in homeless shelters. Of that number 1/2 (50%) were suffering from alcohol or drug abuse. Military service, especially combat can aggravate a drug or alcohol problem. All of these veterans have something to forget, whether it's the horror of war or the horror of the streets. Despite a pledge to honor those who served America, society's back alleys are becoming crowded with veterans. Caught in the political crossfire over government spending, veterans are suffering heavy losses. Military pensions and health care benefits are being cut or severely restricted. Worse for homeless veterans, Congress and past administrations agreed to terminate the $5 million "homeless Veterans Reintegration Project" (HVRP) on September 30, 1995. The decision to cut the program and proposed cuts in other veteran's benefits are part of the government effort to cut the deficit and produce "peacetime dividend". HVRP was one of the country's least expensive and most successful programs. Officials say the decision to terminate HVRP leaves a gaping hole in the homeless veterans services. This makes the role of Americans Helping Veterans Corporation so much more important for those homeless veterans both today and in the future.
